Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program (SF-PPTP)

SF-PPTP AND FOUNDATIONS PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The San Francisco Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program (SF-PPTP) and the Foundations of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (“Foundations”) programs offer integrated coursework, clinical consultation, and mentorship to clinicians seeking to deepen their skills as psychoanalytic psychotherapists. Students in both programs are enrolled automatically as Community Members of SFCP, which allows them access to SFCP’s wide range of educational offerings and the opportunity to meet other psychoanalytically-oriented clinicians in the SFCP community.

The SF-PPTP and Foundations programs are open to pre-licensed and licensed mental health clinicians throughout the Bay Area and Sacramento who work in settings in which they can practice weekly outpatient psychotherapy.  We welcome early-career clinicians who wish to pursue an in-depth introduction to psychoanalytic psychotherapy, as well as more-experienced clinicians seeking to deepen and broaden their exposure to the fundamentals of psychoanalytic psychotherapy theory and practice. Classes take place on Tuesday evenings (6:15 – 9:30 p.m.) at 444 Natoma Street in San Francisco.  Meetings with clinical consultants and mentors are scheduled individually, remote or in person, at a time of mutual convenience.

SFCP is committed to diversity within its membership and its programs. We believe that, too often, non-dominant groups and perspectives have been marginalized within psychoanalytic thinking and within psychoanalytic organizations, and we are working to increase attention to these issues – both conceptually and in practice – in order to enrich our individual work, our programs, and the field of psychoanalysis as a whole.

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program

The Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program (“SF-PPTP”) is a two-year training program that integrates didactic seminars, case conferences, reduced-fee clinical consultation and optional mentorship. Enrollment in the SF-PPTP requires a commitment for two consecutive academic years, 2025-26 and 2026-27, from late August through mid-June for each year.

Foundations of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Foundations of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (“Foundations”) is a one-year educational program in which students join the first-year SF-PPTP cohort for one year of coursework only. Foundations students have the option to participate in SF-PPTP’s reduced-fee clinical consultation and mentorship, though this is not required. Students who enroll in Foundations can transfer into SF-PPTP at any time if they wish to continue to a second year of coursework and clinical consultation.  Enrollment in Foundations requires a one-year commitment for the academic year from late August 2025 through mid-June 2026.

Please note that applications to the two-year SF-PPTP program will be prioritized over applications to Foundations in our admissions process.

Note: The San Francisco Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program (SF-PPTP) and Foundations operate independently from the Palo Alto Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program (PAPPTP) and the Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program (CAPPTP). If you are interested in one of these programs, please find their respective webpages, and their application forms, which are distinct from the application form on this webpage.
