Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020) directed by Eliza Hittman is a beautifully visual and strongly crafted film that follows a 17-year-old girl, Autumn (Sidney Flanigan) as she travels from rural Pennsylvania to New York City to navigate an unintended pregnancy and the challenges of seeking an abortion when it is illegal for her to obtain one in her home state. This intimate drama leads us on a journey of a shutdown adolescent who is struggling both at home and in her personal life but needs to take action. In this stunningly constructed film we see Autumn’s life as she negotiates both her internal world and the social constructions that try to define and limit her. Join Reyna Cowan PsyD, LCSW as we watch and discuss the intricacies of this remarkable film together.
The Child Colloquium Series are offered free of charge through a generous support of the SFCP and the Sophia Mirviss Fund.
