Nicola Abel-Hirsch, FIPA, is a training and supervising psychoanalyst of the British Psychoanalytical Society. She has presented on Bion’s work in the UK, Taiwan (annually 2005-2012), the USA, and Europe. From 2013–2015 she was a visiting professor at the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex. Abel-Hirsch edited Hanna Segal’s last book Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (2007); is the author of Bion 365 Quotes (2019) and Bion: An Introduction (2023), and is a co-author of Bion in the Consulting Room: An Implicit Method of Clinical Inquiry (2024). Under the auspices of Understanding Primitive Mental States (Susan Finkelstein, Chair) she is currently presenting a series of seminars on Bion’s work.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, the learners will be able to:

  1. Part 1: describe how the two poles of Bion’s grid can be useful in clinical practice
  2. Part 1: describe what Bion means by transformation in O and growing.
  3. Part 1: explain how Nicola Abel-Hirsch made use of Bion’s concepts in her case example.
  4. Part 2: give a clinical example of a container/contained relationship
  5. Part 2: apply the conflict between mystic and group to a psychoanalytic situation
  6. Part2: explain how Bion uses the concept of the establishment in a clinical setting.
