The working world of the analytic therapist has changed as remote and hybrid forms are every bit as frequent as in-person meetings. Much has been written on these changes, but few have focused on the fundamental difference between in-person and distanced therapy. Questions of materiality, the history and specificity of location, and bodily proximity all are key aspects of the psychoanalytic frame, as Bleger’s classic formulations attest. In this Scientific Meeting, two clinical examples highlight these points about materiality, the body, and in-person working. A third example illustrates the challenges patients and analysts face with the return to the office or clinic.
In-person meeting offers psychologically usable material––signifiers which serve as day’s residue––that involve bodily safety and danger that cannot be duplicated or substituted for in remote ways of working. The Covid pandemic has changed the choreography of engagement between analyst and patient: the ghostly dust in the frame enters the room. As Bleger says, with ghosts so rustled, non-process has a chance to become process.
Mitchell Wilson, MD is a psychoanalyst, educator, author, and editor. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of JAPA, a Supervising and Training Analyst at SFCP and a Personal and Supervising Analyst at PINC. He practices in Berkeley, and leads study groups on Zoom.
