Nancy J. Chodorow, PhD is a psychoanalyst and sociologist, Professor of Sociology Emerita, University of California, Berkeley, graduate and faculty member, SFCP, and TA-SA emerita, Boston Psychoanalytic Institute and Society.  She was a co-founder of the University of California Interdisciplinary Psychoanalytic Consortium and the UCB Women’s Studies Department.  She is faculty in psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School/Cambridge Health Alliance.  She recently served on the Holmes Commission on Racial Equality of the American Psychoanalytic Association, the International Psychoanalytic Association Research Committee, and the IPA Sexual and Gender Diversities Studies Committee.  She is author of The Reproduction of MotheringFeminism and Psychoanalytic TheoryFemininities, Masculinities, Sexualities: Freud and BeyondThe Power of Feelings: Personal Meaning in Psychoanalysis, Gender and CultureIndividualizing Gender and Sexuality: Theory and Practice, and The Psychoanalytic Ear and the Sociological Eye: Toward an American Independent Tradition.  A book in her honor, Nancy Chodorow and The Reproduction of Mothering: 40 Years On (P. Bueskens, ed.) was published in 2020. 

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, the learners will be able to:

  1. describe three psychosocial formulations in Freud’s writing. 
  2. list three classical sociological concepts or observations germane to psychoanalysis.
  3. explain what Du Bois mean by “double consciousness,” and how this relates to psychoanalytic ideas.
