Enrico Jones Fund for Equality and Excellence

Enrico E. Jones was a distinguished professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and a member and faculty at the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute. At Berkeley, he was the first African American professor in psychology and made significant contributions by developing innovative courses in minority mental health, mentoring ethnic minority students, and widening the diversity of doctoral applicants. He served as director of the Clinical Psychology Training Program and the Psychology Clinic from 1994 to 1997. His empirical studies of psychotherapy and the underlying model of change are powerfully explicated in his widely acclaimed book Therapeutic Action (Jason Aronson, 2000).

Enrico (Rico) Jones’ earliest research on black-white personality differences and the influence of race on psychotherapy process and outcome championed a new field concerned with cross-cultural issues in mental health.

Rico, who completed his analytic training at SFPI in 1992, was recognized as the first Robert S. Wallerstein Fellow in 2001. He served on the SFPI faculty until 2000, three years before his untimely death from multiple myeloma in 2003. His work has had a lasting impact on the fields of clinical psychology, psychoanalysis, psychiatry, and social work, and on the practice of psychotherapy.

Tuition Credit Information

During the program application period, a prospective trainee who identifies as a Person of Color may apply to the Fund for tuition credit for the upcoming academic year. Tuition credit will reduce the tuition for that year, and the reduced tuition will be reflected on the tuition invoice.

  • Applications due on June 10 for Analytic Training Programs and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Applicants.
  • Applications due December 15 for CCSW applicants.
  • We expect the available tuition credit awarded this year will cover approximately 20% of a program’s tuition.
  • Funds available for distribution are dependent upon the total donations received by the date of application review.
  • Trainees who receive tuition credit for a given year may apply for tuition credit for the following year.
